Ask Doktor Dave
February 2008
ghotistick12 asks: Do you vote?
Doktor Dave answers: Heck Yes! If only because you get those cool little stickers that say “I Have Voted, Have You?”. It makes me feel so…superior.
Seriously though, it’s the ONLY real voice the general public has right now and we should use it the best way we know how.
Since, imho, there’s far too much rhetoric, bull crap and miss-information flowing from the mouths of everyone involved in politics (I’m not cynical or anything…), I use my vote to give the lesser known candidates more voice.
I tend to vote for the candidate I know the least, because they haven’t been pouring money into massive amounts of commercial time, ad space, and otherwise trying to *buy* their way into office.
I know this doesn’t necessarily mean they wouldn’t if they could. But, at least they aren’t this time.
I almost NEVER vote for the incumbent, figuring they’ve had enough time to serve themselves and not the public they’re supposed to represent. Of course, I say this without ANY cynicism…
When it comes to bond issues, etc., I use similar logic regarding how much I’ve heard about an issue. But I do read and try to understand the synopses given in the sample ballot…NOT the pros and cons, because that’s just rhetoric, bull crap and miss-information.
Many will say this essentially renders my vote useless, and it does right now. But I do vote, which is more than most of the country does. And if I can help get more voices in government, different parties in power for awhile, instead of Democrats and Republicans (who are essentially the same these days), we may just be better off for awhile.
Maybe we won’t piss off the rest of the world for once. Maybe we’ll take care of ourselves, instead of the rest of the world. Maybe we wouldn’t have quite as many homeless and/or out of work citizens or crimes against each other. We’ll never know unless we try.
Imho, we need to try something other than Democrats and Republicans in higher offices, including President. The way things are right now, just isn’t working.
The Bush administration has displayed a deaf ear to the vast majority of citizens. He has acted against the citizenship by suspending many rights that were fought hard for over the years.
Case in point, did you know that this column will be scanned and likely kept by our government because it mentions Bush in a negative way?
Our government is authorized by the Homeland Security Act to covertly do a background check on me, monitor my emails, phone calls, credit transactions, my entire life if they want…all without a warrant or any 3rd party authorization.
Far too political and conspiracy theory-ish for this column…but as an old friend used to tell me – “Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they AREN’T all out to get you.”
So send in some more light-hearted, nonsensical, music, science, philosophic, religious, spiritual, psychological, and especially sexual questions will ya? Remember, I have an answer for everything!
Yours Truly,
>Doktor Dave, voter<

Congratulations Dok. I am liking what I see here.
hm
what’s so magical about songwriting is that it’s such a unique process for each songwriter and for each song! great article, scott! i laughed (at myself) at the mention of a metronome, as i am somewhat beat-deaf (a spin on tone-deafness)…
i love that this online mag is coming back to life! yea dr. dave!
Fascinating topic – as someone who took music lessons for years, and has written about music for many more, I still see nothing but a blank nothingness when I think about what it would be like to write a song. Probably why I admire folks like Scott who have the gift.
Oh well, maybe 2010…
