Ask Doktor Dave

January 2010

Welcome to the premier ADD column for the new decade, and under the new iteration of MyWeek Online Magazine. I hope you’re as happy as I am to be back! Now, on with this month’s questions…

JK asks: What are your resolutions for 2010?

Doktor Dave answers: I happen to be keeping a resolve I made decades ago to not make resolutions.

If I had to resolve something, it would be to keep putting one foot in front of the other. To keep moving forward no matter what. To roll with whatever life throws my way. It ain’t pretty, but it is practical. Thanks for asking.

GA asks: Will the world really end in 2012?

Doktor Dave answers: No. You might, but the world won’t.

AF asks: Should I upgrade my computer from Vista to Windows 7?

Doktor Dave answers: Maybe.

A lot of folks want you to upgrade to a Mac…go ahead, if you can afford it. I can’t, so I’m a PC guy. I’m not particularly a fan of Apple or Microsoft. It’s just that MS is the cheaper of 2 evils. But I’m not cynical or anything…

Ok. Upgrading to MS 7 is probably a good idea…IF you and your machine are up to it. Upgrading an OS is not an easy task. It’s easier if you’re starting over and don’t have anything you need to save, but still not easy.

You should have a 64-bit machine to get the best out of 7, but there is a 32-bit version. If you upgrade from 32-bit to 64-bit, some programs and device drivers may not work or will need to be individually upgraded. It is said that if it works in Vista, it will work in Win 7. But there are no guarantees.

There are a lot of things to know and consider that are well beyond the scope of this forum. I recommend you download Microsoft’s Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to determine if your hardware is compatible. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/downloads/upgrade-advisor

I also recommend a clean, full installation as opposed to an “upgrade” install, and at least 4gb of RAM. Minimum requirement is 1gb(32-bit) or 2gb(64-bit), but that’s just enough to run the OS. You’ll need more to run any programs like Word etc…you’ll also need a lot of good luck.

That’s all for this time. Keep those questions and comments rolling in and go see live, local music at every opportunity…and if you see me out and about, say “hi!”

May the New Year bring you happiness, love and prosperity…and always be excellent to one another!
