The Spotted Artist – Lindsay White

Lindsay White

Lindsay White

I’m not sure exactly when I became aware of Lindsay White…but I do remember seeing her at Bondi (one of Cathryn Beeks/ListenLocalSD.Com’s many showcases) and not being particularly impressed. I saw her perform a couple of times before I really began paying attention to her. I had the impression that her songs were simplistic and “the same old thing”, but then realized her lyrics were meaningful and held a truth to them. The music was rather simplistic, but it really made the lyrics stand out. Her performance, her vocal style reinforced that sense of truth and added honesty. I’ve since become a huge fan as she consistently produces excellent music. I’ve also noticed, and become a fan of her shoe collection.

She’s recently added a full band to back her up (Joel Mendoza – Percussion, Steve Nichols – Lead Guitar, James Staton – Bass), giving many of her songs a new and different sound. The band is excellent and fills out her songs very nicely.

Lindsay will soon have her first CD available. Get one or two, you’ll love it!

1. You’ve been receiving a lot of press and accolades recently. What do you think about that?

I really hate all the attention. Ha! Just kidding! I am thrilled that people are taking the time to listen to what I have to say musically, and I’m honored that they feel compelled to write about it. Every time some piece of press comes out, I print it and post it on my cubicle wall- one more reminder that I can make a career out of this if I keep trying!

2. Has having the full band backing you now affected your songwriting?

It hasn’t really affected the essence of my style, but it does free me up. Before the band, sometimes I would imagine parts that I just wouldn’t be able to play. Or I’d have an urge to write a rock song that would wind up sounding subtle and folksy just because of my limited guitar skills. Now I feel like I’m playing with a bigger box of toys, and we’re having a lot of fun in the process!

3. I feel like all your songs are a peek into your private life, is that the way it is or is it the way you perform them? Do you ever write songs about things you haven’t personally experienced?

For the most part, that’s the way it is. If the song isn’t about something I’ve personally experienced, it’s usually about someone close to me (a friend, relative, etc.). I think my head would explode if I didn’t write songs. I am more honest with them than any person in my life, including myself! I have written some songs about people I don’t know or situations I haven’t experienced, but usually only challenge myself to do that on the rare occasion of writer’s block.

4. Of the thousands of shoes you own, do you have one favorite pair? Where do you store all of them?

Hmmm, that’s like asking me to pick a favorite kid. I think my go-to pair of the moment are these brown slouchy boots I got from Ross last year. They go with mostly everything and they’re really comfortable. I have a very small room, so I try to stay organized and keep them neat in my closet, but they wind up all over the place. Let’s be honest, there are also about 10 pairs in the trunk of my car.

5. How long ago did you have those dimples installed?

Well when my mom was about to push me out, God came in and up-sold her on the lifetime warranty and the dimple upgrade. It took her a couple extra hours of labor, but it’s worth it because now I get to go to heaven no matter what, and I’ve got a smile that could get away with murder.

6. When do you think your first CD will be available? Will you save me one? Please? I’ll be your friend if you do… ;^)

I was hoping for a summer release, but I keep having to remind myself to remove any self-imposed deadlines. The great thing about being an independent artist is you get to make the rules. Even though I have enough songs recorded to make an album, I keep writing more and I want to hear what some of them sound like produced. Alex Zander (my producer at Studio Studios) and I have a great relationship and the more we work together, the better the songs get. I also feel like an album should be a snapshot of the artist’s life and experiences at that particular moment in time, so I want to make sure to get that story across. Long story short, I have no idea when it will be ready, but I will be sure to save you two copies.

7. Do you have a favorite gig? What’s your dream gig?

I am loving playing with the band right now, even at dingy little dive bars like Rhythm Lounge. We just played a gig at Winston’s last Saturday that was so fun! Lots of friends and family came out and it was a nice, chill Saturday evening show. My (local) dream gigs with the band are House of Blues, Belly Up and Anthology. I also think it would be a blast and half to go on tour…anything to get me out of this cubicle!
