This is a quote from Dave Sawyer’s current My Week Online Magazine interview with Rob Deez: “Some people, Mitch Feingold for example, seem to think that I wouldn’t be appropriate because of the songs I have on my MySpace page. But what’s that old saying? Don’t judge a book by it’s cover? Mitch is missing out by assuming I wouldn’t be appropriate. I’m so appropriate it’s ridiculous.” – Rob Deez
Mitch Feingold responds: Actually I formed my impression based on what Deez had on his MySpace site at the time. That is how I “auditioned” people for my Songwriters Acoustic Nights show in the beginning. I felt that a singer-songwriter, using MySpace as a marketing tool, would put on the songs that best represented them. I did not see it as a “cover”, but as what they thought best represented them.
I don’t censor performers, but I need performers to be sensitive to the Swedenborg Hall venue. That is because these shows are fundraisers for that venue and therefore represent, in part, the Swedenborgian Church. My experience in producing comedy shows over the years has taught me that some comics rely on “vocabulary” to be what they think is cutting edge. The best comics rely on substance and content. I think that this is true of songwriting. This doesn’t mean that it cannot be politically incorrect. Personally, I like politically incorrect.
I think that Rob Deez is a very bright and talented performer who has a future in the world of entertainment. I hope that this clears up any misunderstanding. That being said, I invite Rob to perform at a Songwriters Acoustic Nights. The next opening I have is Sunday, April 18th. I usually book them 6 to 8 weeks in advance.
Dave, I think your magazine is becoming the best source of uncensored information for the San Diego music scene, and is a fitting tribute to your friend Scott. As always, I appreciate your support and help in promoting music.

Congratulations Dok. I am liking what I see here.
hm
what’s so magical about songwriting is that it’s such a unique process for each songwriter and for each song! great article, scott! i laughed (at myself) at the mention of a metronome, as i am somewhat beat-deaf (a spin on tone-deafness)…
i love that this online mag is coming back to life! yea dr. dave!
Fascinating topic – as someone who took music lessons for years, and has written about music for many more, I still see nothing but a blank nothingness when I think about what it would be like to write a song. Probably why I admire folks like Scott who have the gift.
Oh well, maybe 2010…
