Well here is the next installment of MyWeek in Music for last week's big week in music.
Since it was such a big week for me musically speaking. I decided to do it in two parts, so if you missed part one from yesterday you better go read that one first!
Well the next night was Friday and I went to see Brooklyn play at Kirin Sushi. I had never had sushi before so it was a double treat. Brooklyn was great. And I know that I talk about some of the same people over and over again but sometimes you just have to go out and support your friends even if you just heard them lately. Beside how many of you listen to the same CD once a day in your car on the way to work or whenever you happen to be listening to music. I'll bet lots of you do that all the time. Brooklyn is the kind of artist you can listen to over and over and never get tired of them. Well Brooklyn was gonna take off after and go with a friend to see a female group at Canes that was a cover band (only Chicks [grin] who were covering Iron Maiden. Sounded cool but Doktor Dave and me decide it would be fun to go see Deadline Friday at O'Connells. When we got there we found out that SuperUnloader was going to play too! Now I think I mentioned last week I have always been a bit of a headbanger so this was right up my alley! I know most of the band members of Deadline Friday and I know the Drummer of SuperUnloader but I have never got to hear either band. I have been to plenty of gigs where they were going to play. But always had to leave before they got to play. Deadline Friday was a kick ass band and I found out from friends that everything was just working for them that night. They really had the place jumping and enjoying the music and the place was packed. One of these days I will do a focus on them as well. Then SuperUnloader came up and they SuperUnloaded. They were awesome! They did more than kick ass in my opinion!! I don't know all the name of their songs but as soon as I can afford it I will pick up both of these bands CD if they have one. Which I am sure they do! I was really happy I went to this gig, and I hope to go to more shows with these bands soon.
Saturday I decided to stay home. There were lots of people who had shows, many of them my friends but I needed to get over the hangover I was sporting from Friday. So I stayed home and recuperated. (I didn't really have a hangover; it just makes a handy excuse! Some of my friends wouldn't understand me just wanting to stay home for the night [grin].
So on Sunday I went to see Listen Local's presentation of "The Game". It was being put on at Cosmos Coffee Shop in LaMesa and it was being televised by Java Jams, a local television show that showcases Acoustic music in San Diego. You can find it on the CTN network on whatever channel it comes on in your area!
Now if you know Listen Local, you know about the Game. Every month they pick some titles and songwriters are challenged to write a song to any one or all of those titles. Originally, this was something invented by Jeff Berkley, Steve Poltz and Gregory Page while touring in Australia. Since then Listen Local which is run by the beautiful and talented Cathryn Beeks has been doing this for a while now. This time it is televised, so if you ever wanted to see one of these great and fun shows you can see it on your television on Java Jams. Now this one is done in two sets. Usually artists have two song titles to pick from and write a song for one or both by their choice? Sunday night's; was done in two set and everybody knew in advance which one they would be doing. It went like this:
First Set at 6:30
SONG TITLE: WHEN YOU GO
Cathryn Beeks & Matt Silvia
Barbara Nesbitt
Christopher Dale
Not Your Mom
Second Set approx 8:00
SONG TITLE: FEEL FREE
Sven-Erik Seaholm
Berkley Hart
Gregory Page
Dave Howard
Lisa Sanders
Now the first set was in the order it said and Aaron Bowen was sick so he did not show up. The second set was not necessarily in that order but I cannot remember whom it ended with. And it was a little different because each artist was allowed to do one of their own original songs first and then the game song. What I do know is that when you go to a "the game" everybody writes a song and some are good, some are great and some need serious work. But every song sung tonight was an excellent song. None were more standout than the others. But I have my favorites. I liked the one done by Barbara Nesbitt, the one by Sven-Eric Seaholm and the one by Dave Howard. But all of them were so good I am sure many of you will be hearing them soon if you go see any of these people at one of their shows. That is the purpose after all, not only is it entertainment but it is a way to keep the artist challenged to keep writing new material. To try that new material out on an audience, and to work out the kinks. It was a lot of fun and I am really glad I got to go! And you should go too! Go out and give a listen to your local artist. Support them because these may be the stars of tomorrow and you heard em first here in San Diego. Well this was the end of MyWeek in Music for this week. I started my new week on Wednesday and will soon be telling you about the newest people or some of the oldest. But, you'll here it here and hopefully it will help you decide what to go see next time you have that inkling to go out and listen to music. Well I'm Out!
