Well this will be a short MyWeek in Music because I am sure most of you are finalizing you plans for your holiday. Plus I haven't gone out much on account of feeling a bit under the weather. So I didn't get out much the second half of the week.
Wednesday: I left of in last weeks MyWeek saying I was headed for O.B. Annual Restaurant Walk. But I didn't get around like I thought I would that night as I was helping Chelsea out with setting up and helping with the sound. Plus due to a mix up on the MySpace schedule I thought some of the other performers were playing later. By the time I was done working and listening to The Dreamstalkers. A little bird called me and told me all the other entertainment was done for the night. Oh well? So I hung around with the band sampling the O'Bistro's Clam Chowder and Passion Fruit Tea for the remainder of the evening. Yummy!
Thursday: I went to see Brooklyn again at the Brass Rail in Hillcrest. I was under the mistaken notion that Brooklyn was the only performer other than her guitarist Dave Sawyer and a guest violinist Alicia Ruggierio. But this was actually another production by Mono Mono (aka Jeff Berringer). So I got there early because of bus lines and told the bouncers I was with Brooklyn who had called ahead and they told me to go on in. There was a $5 cover tonight, which turned out to be warranted it was a large bill of performers. I had baked some brownies (basically to get them out of the house so I wouldn't eat them all) They ok'd the brownies but wouldn't let me bring in my sealed bottled water. Since I didn't have a car I had to throw it away. Waste, oh well. The first performer was setting up his keyboard and a semi-elaborate fog machine that would blow straight up from under the keyboard blowing his shoulder length hair like an 8o's style performer. In fact the music was a little reminiscent of 8o's music and he had some cool songs. One in Spanish about a Caveman and a Cavewoman and another song about a Murderous Gypsy. Or so we were told. I hadn't recognized the performer because I have never seen him without his hat and his hair was stuffed inside. It was Jeff Berenger himself and I was pleasantly surprised because I didn't know he performed. I just thought he hosted the events. After the performance his hat quickly went back on and hair went back under and that was my moment of recognition. The next performer was an all-girl group called "Pick Up Girl" this was a great band. They really rocked the Happy Bar. And the crowd loved them as well as I. They had great songs! Mostly original, all great! If you get a chance to see this band be sure and say Everybody's #1 fan sent ya! After Pick Up Girl was "Alex Arndt". I thought Alex was an excellent singer and his guitar playing was pretty good too! He did a few covers and a few of his own songs and promised me his CD was all originals. So if you get a chance to see or hear him. Pick up one of his CD's he'll keep you entertained. (Whoops I left out someone named Raspberry something? can't remember the last part though) Next came Brooklyn and I helped her with her Keyboard setup and listened to what came next. Brooklyn did some of my favorite songs of hers and also did a couple I had not heard yet. I once heard her say she has written quite a few and I have yet to hear them all! Doktor Dave Sawyer played guitar with her and Alicia was a no show because of sickness. After Brooklyn came a band called "The Handsome Devils" They were a Rock-a-Billy band like the Polecats or Brian Setzer. I thought they sounded pretty good but I heard someone in the crowd tell someone he needs to practise his guitar more. But it sounded ok to me! It may not have been good enough to go into a studio… but to entertain a crowd? It was good enough! I saw my friend Kerri Dopart there that night and I got excited that I would actually get to hear some of her songs but she was just there to listen to the music like I was! Too Bad! But I will get to hear her sometime! There were two other artist that night… a Willie Ames and a Don Truesdale, neither of which I heard because my ride was leaving and we were getting fogged in, so it was time to go! If you get a chance to go out and see one of Jeffrey's productions Its usually worth the $5 cover. And just because it's a Happy Bar doesn't mean you can't go enjoy some good music! I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving from Everybody's #1 Fan, Scott Zensen. I'm Out!
