Its time for MyWeek In Music again! Well I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving? I know I did! I was invited to a friend's Thanksgiving and no one had ever done that before? Most of my Thanksgivings have been with either my nuclear family when I was married or with my ex's family or mine. But no one had ever invited me to their Thanksgiving before. So my Thanks go out to Chuck and Joanna Schiele for inviting me! It was a great Thanksgiving! Now as far as music is concerned I just didn't get out to see much this week! Just wasn't as much happening because people were probably with family and friends and not gig-ing as much. I am sure that there was something out there. I just didn't get to it myself. I did manage to get to Farmer's market in O.B. Last Wednesday and several of my favorite people were there entertaining the O.B. masses. But I want to talk about only one of them this week. Barbara Nesbitt. I know I have mentioned her often because she is hands down one of my favorite singer/songwriter's in San Diego. Now, Barbara is fairly new to San Diego and its music scene. She is a recent transplant from Virginia Beach where she was in several bands. One called Rare Daze and a rock band called Cradle. But with several CD's under her belt with the other bands she felt it was time to move on to a solo career. Not out of thinking she was a hot property. She is very humble about her talent. But she is very talented! It didn't take her long to get noticed once she settled here in San Diego. She has won several music awards and honors since the short time she has been here! And she has been written up in several magazines both here and back in Virginia Beach. The first time I saw or heard Barbara was at the Acoustic Alliance 12 back in April. I remember being impressed with all the bands up on stage. It was my first Acoustic Alliance and I was still hanging out with my friend Gina who introduced me to the music scene. Which is weird since I have lived here on and off for most of my life and Gina has only been here a short time too! When Barbara got to do her songs I was amazed at how beautiful her voice is; she just seemed to sing with such soul searing crispness I had not heard before. You can get lost in that voice as it transports you directly into her songs. Her songs seem to be a personal introspection's of a woman's travels through loves, life and disappointments. On that night I went back to buy my first CD from the local San Diego Music Scene only to be pleasantly surprised that the CD she was offering was free. It had 4 songs on it that was produced by Sven-Eric Seaholm. And she is going into the studio soon next year to complete her first full length CD here in San Diego with Jeff Berkley. But don't expect it to be free! Those songs you will hear at most of her shows although she has many more new ones now! Those first four songs being: Fly, Horrible Moon, Many Miles to Go and Stranger Things. You can find many of these songs on her MySpace site at http://www.myspace.com/barbaranesbitt or her website at http://www.barbaranesbitt.com/ and maybe a couple of the new ones. I can't express here how beautiful Barbara's Voice or songs are here. You just have to go out and listen to her yourself! Her voice is so strong and yet sweet at times. At the recent Farmer's market while I was in the crowd moving around several people kept remarking on how beautiful her voice is and how wonderful her sound is! And from personal experience of watching the crowd in O.B. she was one of the first entertainers there that made a lot of tips in her guitar case. Many put it out there and get a few dollars but people were very impressed with Barbara. Now she wasn't alone, as of late she has been singing with Mike Spurgat and Bill Coomes who are both from Deadline Friday another favorite group of mine! They have occasionally billed themselves as the Barbara Nesbitt Trio but that is a loose title that I don't think they are entirely comfortable with or maybe its just Barbara being humble again because they are her songs and its primarily her voice. But both Bill and Mike are excellent vocalists and the three of them harmonize together like they have been together for years. And the guys do make Barbara's songs sound awesome! Mike is a great guitarist and Bill plays a Djembe. And hey I haven't even said anything about the quality of Barbara's guitar playing. She doesn't just write wonderful words but writes really insightful music too! Her guitar playing is awesome all by itself even if she didn't sing you want to listen but you would be missing the best part if she didn't sing! And Barbara is not hard on the eyes either, but you guys out there shouldn't get too excited. She has a good-looking boyfriend and they are one of the cutest couples I have seen around town. I am proud to call Barbara one of my best friends. I have several now and it always amazes me that I went through so much of my life without a single friend. And now it seems I have so many, so I really have lots to be thankful for! Happy Holidays everyone! I'm Out!
