Whew! Time for another MyWeek in Music already!!! Well that might be difficult this week. LOL I have been around music all week but haven't sat down and really listened to any of it carefully like I usually do! I have been being social for once in my life or just helping out my friends in one way or another. A lot of what I did hear this week is much the same as I hear or have talked about here many times before. It's still good music and maybe I will save some of that for focusing on in a later MyWeek In Music? So what am I gonna talk about you say?
Well I am gonna do a focus on one of my favorite rock bands in town. You have heard me talk about them before but I thought I'd try to do a little more in depth look at the band and try to promote their next show at the same time.
SweetTooth Rocks!!! O'Connell's Dec 9th with Superdoo and Rob Deez
So what I am going to say here first is SweetTooth is going to be playing this Saturday at O'Connell's.
O'Connells @ 1310 Morena Blvd. is an Irish pub bar that has been under new management since early 2005. Since then they have been one of several bars in San Diego that has music or some sort of music every night of the week. Finding SweetTooth there is a common occurrence, sometimes every month.
SweetTooth is comprised of Matt Silvia guitar/vocals, John McBride – guitar, Jeff Johnson – bass and one of the best drummers in town - Rob Garbo. Now here is where I try to tell you what a great sound they have and what I think of the band. But I think that's obvious! I am writing this! What I want to emphasize here is the writing talents of Matt Silvia another person whom I consider to be a really great friend. In fact all these guy are good friends. But that is not biasing my thoughts here. They really are very good! I have never seen them play anywhere that the crowd doesn't just come unglued as they rock the house. They are definitely a crowd favorite. Matt's songs are well written with interesting lyrics and Matt belts them out with a voice that sounds great doing Rock or when he is doing some other style in other groups like The Cathryn Beeks Ordeal. SweetTooth doesn't like to categorize themselves into a genre like so many bands do these days. They just rock! They have many influences like Beatles, AC/DC, Led Zeppelin to the Cajun sounds of Buckwheat Zydeco, Steve Riley, to the more contemporary genius of Fugazi, Slint, Kerosene 454, Soundgarden, Hum, and Pinback...to name a few. This last sentence are their own words on what their influences are and you can find them here at their website or you can click on the SweetTooth Rock's above and go to their MySpace site. Either place you should be able to listen to a couple of their songs.
John McBride is the lead guitarist of their band and whether he has an electric or an acoustic guitar, you'll hear awesome riffs and sounds that make this band unique. Jeff Johnson is one of the best Bass players in town as well and you can't find a nicer guy. He once paid an exorbitant cover for me because I would have had to leave and not see the band play. I definitely owe this guy a drink or two! You can sometimes find him in many other bands like The Cathryn Beeks Ordeal or the J. Turtle band. The same can be said about Rob Garbo for those two bands except "Where doesn't he play", this guy is such an exceptional drummer you can find him in a half dozen bands and he is in constant demand, and a hell of a nice guy too! When you put this much talent into a band you can't help but to like them and know that they will be a success!
Now whether your on their website or their MySpace site you will find only 4 songs:
Bleeding Nerve
Allright
Belly
Dark Night
listed but they have a much larger repretoire of songs. In Fact there is one song that I keep forgetting the name of but it is great to watch everyone in a bar just come to a stop from their conversations to watch them play this songs and bang their heads in unison to this tune! Now SweetTooth has been recording in the studio and should have a full length CD out early next year! I believe its being produced by Jeff Berkley but I am not sure on that point, it could be Idynomite Media or both . When this CD comes out I expect anyone who reads this to buy that CD and it will be money well spent. Tell them Scott Everyone's #1 Fan recommended you pick it up! Now you won't get any kind of discount for saying I sent you so don't expect one. All I am saying is that I have a lot of respect for this band and I wholly recommend you buy their CD.
Most of all I just want to get the word out to people everywhere and San Diego in general that there is a really great band playing around town that really rocks! I will be going to their show on the 9th at O'Connell's not only because I like this band and Superdoo and Rob Deez. But it is also the eve of my daughter's 21st birthday and she wants to see SweetTooth perform. Now she will get plenty of opportunities to see them perform. But I thought since she would be turning 21 at midnight and there are a couple of bands on before them that she might get to have her first drink and get to see one of the best bands in San Diego play? What could be better for you first foray into music in a bar! I hope she has as good of a time as I do and if you are there for the show come by and say hello and wish my girl a happy 21st! I'm Out!
