Well last weeks survey was an abysmal failure. I was just looking for a little info on what you liked here and what you didn't? But apparently people thought that the info was going to be sold or their names released or held against them. But that was not the case I purposely left the form open so no one truly had to put their real name and could remain anonymous. I should have pointed it out, oh well my bad. The only reason I asked for names or emails in the first place was to keep repeat answers to a minimum and to keep the spider robots out. Maybe in the future I will try this again with a different format. All I really wanted to know was how the site is working for everybody and what they would like to see changed. The original idea of this site was to make it interactive. But its hardly interactive when I can't tell if people are using the site other than how many impressions I get and on which day.
Today's issue will be mainly about The OB Street Fair but their will be a guest
article by Kevin Thomas of Stratosphere. This first article of possible several is short and you can find it under the the OB Street Fair info.
Also I want to thank all the people who came to my Birthday show! But especially all those who came to play for the show! Nicole Waters, Johnny Different, Keith Haman, Joe Cardillo, Marie Haddad, Barbara Nesbitt, Podunk Nowhere, Mary Grasso. This is a short bio of the band Stratosphere!
A San Diego Local Rockin' Band.
By: Kevin Thomas
Today I would like to answer our most frequently asked question, where did we come up with the band name Stratosphere? We'll, I had just moved for a temporary stay in New Jersey, and I went out to buy a new futon frame and mattress for my stay. I had no idea that there would be fourteen different kinds of futon mattresses to try out. It took me all afternoon to choose one: “this one is a little fluffier, but that one is a little firmer, oh, but that one over there has springs and triple layer padding.” What an ordeal. Anyway, when I got home that night and went to sleep on my new futon, I had a dream about being way up in the sky, in the Stratosphere. The sky, however, was full of people, people and beings of all sorts, walking around, floating around, communicating, some with bodies down on earth, and some from other worlds far beyond the physical one (worlds where they only have one type of futon to choose from I would hope). I met beings there who I felt a really deep connection, much more so than day-to-day interactions with people on the ground. It was all so emotionally charged, so mysterious, and so positive. And I met a girl, and we had that feeling that we knew each other from some other place that we could barely remember. When I spoke with her it felt like we had some magical connection between us, as if time had come to a stop and we were the only two people in the universe.
When I woke up I realized that this space was not up in the sky, but was actually a junction point between the physical world and the other side. It was a place where people meet in their dreams, where we communicate with higher beings; it was a great big blue energy field with a thousand hidden back doors to other levels of reality.
When I woke up I began writing a song about this place and using Stratosphere as the title, and just then I happened to look down at the tag on the end of my new mattress and noticed that the name of the mattress that I had spent hours picking out was “Stratosphere.” Coincidence?
The song developed into a pretty cool tune, but for some reason I was never quite satisfied with it and have never played it with the rest of the band. When it came time to pick a band name I found myself reminiscing about a time when I was twelve years old, had just started playing guitar, and was imagining myself touring and playing big shows in an original rock band that connected on a deep mystical level with thousands of fans. At the time, I had thought of what the band's name would be, and imagined it all highlighted in shinny colored lights on the big stage---it started with an S, had several syllables, it was the name Stratosphere. But as a twelve year old that word was not even in my vocabulary, so I couldn't even pronounce it at the time. It was a vision of my future band that would be touching many people's hearts and minds in a positive way with music that opened doors to new worlds.
When I recalled this long forgotten memory, in conjunction with all the coincidences around the name, the heavily emotional dream, and all its metaphysical implications that also run through so many of my lyrics, I knew that Stratosphere had to be more than just a song title. It had to be the band name. My band members probably thought that I was just to wacked out to argue with about it and agreed with the name just to shut me up.
Thanks for listening.
